How to compare home security cameras
A practical guide to resolution, field of view, power, storage and ongoing costs for Australian homes.

Start with the installation point
Decide whether the camera will sit indoors, under cover or fully exposed. A battery camera is easier to position, while a wired camera can record more often without charging.
- Check the stated weather rating
- Confirm the Wi-Fi signal reaches the mounting point
- Check whether a hub is required

Resolution is only one part of image quality
A higher resolution can preserve more detail, but field of view, sensor size, lens aperture, lighting and compression also affect the result. Compare the complete camera system instead of choosing by 2K or 4K alone.

Include storage and subscription costs
Some cameras store clips on a local card or hub. Others place important features behind a cloud plan. Calculate the cost over several years and check which detection features work without a subscription.

Compare like with like
Keep doorbells, fixed cameras, pan and tilt cameras and multi-camera kits in separate comparisons. Pack size, included hubs and solar panels can otherwise make the cheaper listing look more expensive.
